Coming in 2031! (Hopefully.)
Right now, being the first Christmas tree farm to successfully grow Redwoods east of California is just a pursuit, albeit one we’re tackling with enthusiastic vigor.
I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with different conifers, most of which have been fun, but failed adventures. In February of 2013, I planted 100 Redwood plugs. No special care was given and all but one eventually died. That remaining one, though, became the most interesting, high potential Christmas tree Hollow Creek Tree Farm has ever produced. It is now thriving.
I’ve been researching Redwoods intently the last year or so, and experts tell me that even if you can get them to live in our area, most generic Redwoods grown from seed will not make good Christmas trees as their form is often erratic, with prostrate or descending branches.
SO! We have begun cloning our breakthrough survivor (pictured) in hopes that its offspring will have the same DNA qualities needed to thrive in our zone.
We hope to have some for sale early next decade, but in the meantime, you can follow our Redwood Journey on Facebook here: Redwood Christmas Trees
