Our philosophy of pruning Christmas trees

There is a science to growing Christmas trees, no doubt. There is so much bioactivity in the soil that affects the growth and health of a Christmas tree, but for that we take soil samples and rely on more knowledgeable professionals to tell us what to do. And then we do it. From there, growing Christmas trees is more of an art. There is a creative process inherent in laying out the design of the farm and in the shaping of the tree.

We consider ourselves professional Christmas tree growers and pruners. Does that mean we know what we're doing? The honest answer is, not necessarily. We've been at this for over 30 years now and when you've been doing something for so long it's easy to think you know what you're doing, and hard to think you might be doing it wrong. In other words, one gets into a rut. So, every year we try to re-think the process. We listen to customer comments and try to look at the basic structure of Christmas trees with a fresh eye.

What we have learned is, many growers prune their trees tight, and most customers want a looser look to their tree. After all, the idea is to hang ornaments under the branches, some inside the tree, some more along the outer edge. All customers do not want the same thing, though, and so we try not to prune all trees the same way. Our goal is to have a variety of styles; narrow, wide, loose, tight, open, full. Of course, tree species & varieties can ultimately influence these styles.

In the spirit of looking at Christmas trees with a fresh eye, we're also experimenting with different species of trees. Some of these will challenge the traditional Christmas tree concept, but will also meet the basic criteria. That is; decoratability, evergreen, conical. What do we have in mind? Well, you'll just have to visit us in future years to see for yourself. In this business, it doesn't happen overnight. What we're planting now takes at least 5 years to evaluate.

In our endeavor to grow the best Christmas trees for our customers, we need your comments, good and bad. We like hearing positive comments; who doesn't?  But, never hesitate to let us know what we could be doing better. As professionals, your input is what we need to grow.

Professionals tend to believe that the way they do it is the right way. We hope questioning ourselves keeps us fresh.
