Americans refer to these PVC (polyvinyl chloride) based imports as "artificial" or "fake" trees. A fellow grower near Greenville calls them "pretend" trees. We call them "plastic trees from China" which is specific and accurate. Facts about fake trees:
• Made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
• The vast majority are made in poorly regulated China
• Non-recylable (ultimately end up in landfills)
• Non-renewable (petroleum based)
Fake Christmas trees are also not fireproof. Christmas trees do not catch fire very often, but when they do, it is usually because of faulty lights. Fake Christmas trees are just as susceptible to this as Real Trees, but when Fake trees combust, they can emit toxins into the air.
To be honest, we do not begrudge anyone for choosing a plastic tree from China. Just don't claim it's for environmental reasons!
